A Conversation with Cara Hoffman, Author of "So Much Pretty"

Cara Hoffman, author of the highly praised novel "So Much Pretty", will speak with audience members about her book and some of the themes it highlights: domestic violence, violence against women, community responsibilities, and the need to "raise rational, capable, peaceful men"--something she views as a social justice project of paramount importance.

Cara Hoffman grew up in a depressed upstate New York town, dropped out of high school, bought a one-way ticket to London with her savings, and spent the next three years writing and working as an agricultural laborer and runner in Europe and the Middle East.

In the 90s she returned to the United States, became a mother, and began working as an investigative reporter at a daily newspaper. Hoffman covered New York State’s rural and Rust Belt communities for over a decade, reporting on environmental politics, county legislatures, and crime. In 2000 she received a New York State Foundation for the Arts Fellowship for her writing on the aesthetics of violence and its impact on children, a topic she would continue to research and explore through fiction.

Hoffman received her Masters of Fine Arts in Writing from Goddard College in 2009. She has been a guest lecturer at Cornell University, Hobart and William Smith Colleges and a Visiting Writer at Goddard College. She lives in Manhattan with her son where she tutors at the Lower East Side Girls Club, and teaches English at Bronx Community College.
