Defying a blistering New York City heat wave, 113 friends and
alumni of St. John’s University spent a day on the golf green to
raise scholarship funds at the 27th Annual Staten Island Golf
Outing.
Held at the South Shore Country Club, the outing raised $26,671
in scholarship aid for students at St. John’s Staten Island campus.
Most of the proceeds will support the John L.F. Sipp/Paul DeStefano
Scholarship Fund. A portion of the monies will go to the Sigma Chi
Upsilon Memorial Scholarship Fund.
The event drew many leading friends and alumni, including former
Staten Island Borough President Ralph Lamberti. Also in attendance
was John Colligas, a 1938 St. John’s graduate, and his son.
Later that day, more than 145 benefactors of St. John’s gathered
for a special dinner at the club. The dinner honored four exemplary
friends of the University:
Terry Tarangelo, Vice President for Business Development at the
Staten Island Bank & Trust
Otis Voilsa consultant with the engineering and surveying firm of
Wohl & O’Mara
Jack DeSantis, a partner in the accounting firm of DeSantis,
Kiefer, Shall & Sarcone, LLP
Roland Benedetti, an attorney, retired NYPD lieutenant and retired
St. John’s professor
Established in 1994, the John L.F. Sipp/Paul DeStefano Scholarship
fund has awarded 49 scholarships totaling $74,450 to students who
are sophomores, juniors or seniors at the Staten Island campus.
Awarded on the basis of need and merit, scholarship amounts per
student range from $750 to $5,000.
The scholarship recipient for 2006-07 is Jamie Johnson, whose award
for the academic year totals $5,000.
