St. John's University's Staten Island Campus Welcomes South Korean Students from Yeungnam University
September 19, 2006
Staten Island, N.Y.
St. John’s University’s Staten Island Campus welcomed 15
students from Yeungnam University (YU) this semester as part of a
study abroad program with South Korea. This initiative is the
result of a 30-year partnership between St. John’s and Yeungnam
University located in Daegu, the third largest city in South
Korea.
The students arrived on the Staten Island Campus in early
September. They will reside in off-campus housing while taking
courses on both the Queens and Staten Island campuses.
Students, faculty and administrators were on hand to greet them and
lost no time in immersing them in the St. John’s
experience.

It appears that our Korean students are particularly fond of the
Staten Island campus, which is much smaller than their urban campus
in Daegu. They especially enjoy the green landscape and the
comfortable learning spaces. Their academic focus is on
speaking English, both in class and to American students, who have
taken them on many tours about the City. The Korean students
in turn have enjoyed cooking for our students and introducing them
to Korean culture. In addition to raising their TOEFL scores,
speaking more fluently and making lifelong American friends, our
Korean students, like our own, want to see a Mets game before they
head for home.
The Staten Island Campus community thoroughly enjoys living and
learning with these students as they discover New York through the
St. John’s lens.
