What is Student Government?

Student Government Inc. acts as the official liaison between the student body and university leadership. SGI is the advocate for student interests to the SI campus community and university at large. We act as the gate keepers and the governing body that preside over all student organizations on campus. We try our hardest to accommodate and aid all of the students within St John’s University Staten Island campus.

Staten Island (SI) SGI has two branches of government:

The Executive Board consisting of:

  • President
  • Vice President
  • Secretary
  • Treasurer
  • Student Union Chairperson
  • Advisor (Dean of Student Life, Non-voting)

The Student Senate is comprised of 10 elected student members representing the following constituencies:

  • Seniors (4th Year Students)
  • Juniors (3rd Year Students)
  • Sophomores (2nd Year Students)
  • St. John’s College of Liberal Arts & Sciences
  • College of Professional Studies
  • Peter J. Tobin College of Business
  • School of Education
  • Resident Students
  • Commuter Students (2)


Requirements for Student Government Inc. Candidates

Executive Board 

  • Fulltime student
  • 2.5 GPA
  • Must be absent of conduct related issues
  • Must have served one full year prior to running for an executive board position

Senators 

  • Full time student
  • 2.5 GPA
  • Must be absent of conduct related issues
  • Must be included within the portion of the student body, the candidate wishes to run for, in regard to position. (year: junior, position: junior senator; school: CPS, position: cps senator)


Expectations of SGI Members

Executive Board

  • Executive Board members are required to attend all Student Government Inc. events
  • Executive Board members are required to attend all Meetings (Public, Private, and University Senate meetings)
  • Executive Board Members are required to do 5 office hours a week

Senate

  • Senators are required to attend >80% of all Student Government Inc. events
  • Senators are required to attend all meeting Public and Private
  • Senators are required to do 2 office hours a week

Voting Online Instructions

  • When you click to vote, you'll be asked to enter your Username and Password. (your username is your STJ Computer USER LOGIN ID [e.g. jsmit225]; your password is your 8 digit ID# on the front of your StormCard  [e.g. 91234567]) 
  • After entering your Username and Password, click "Login." 
  • Click on the box next to the candidates name to make your choice. 
  • You are required to vote for all positions contested, but each position you vote for can only have one selection for the vote to count. 
  • To record your votes, click on the green "Vote" button at the end of the process. 
  • To view/print a Confirmation receipt of your ballot, click on "View Receipt for Student Government, Inc. Executive Board Elections 2012 Ballot." 
  • You may sign out at any time by clicking the "Log Out" tab. Once you click the green "Vote" button, you cannot sign back in.
