Enabling students of many ethnicities to express themselves;
engage with the University community; and serve the larger
community through dance, the Caution Dance Team was founded in 2004
by Mecca White, a St. John's University graduate. Prior to the 2004
founding of Caution, the Staten Island campus had no dance teams or
dance programs. Since then, Caution has been active in many
on-campus events including Diversity Day, Mardi Gras, Open Mic
Night, Bailemos, the Greek Week Talent Show and its annual
talent/fashion show, "Express Ya' Self."
In addition to on-campus events, Caution also has participated
in many events off campus such as competing at the Kennedy Center
in Harlem, NY, and performing at Red Storm women's basketball games
during halftime. Service events are also a large part of Caution's
work at the University. Members of Caution have volunteered at the
New Orleans Plunge (Hurricane Katrina Relief), Campus Ministry's
Midnight-Runs, University Day and ONE Day. Further serving their
community, Caution members have worked with the Kids Dance
Workshop, teaching public school children about different dance
styles and helping the children stage a small production. Caution
makes real the University’s Vincentian ideal of community service
at the Staten Island campus and in the larger community.
