The mission for Peer Mentoring programs is to assist new
students with their college transition as well as provide them with
a social and an educational environment outside the classroom. It
also fosters engagement with the University body and community
throughout the student's college career.
Peer Mentoring Programs
include:
Project Aim - Asian and International
Mentoring - Is the program to assist Asian and
International students with college transition and to provide them
with a social and an educational environment outside of the
classroom where they can enhance their English-speaking skills,
assimilate to the University community and increase their
cross-cultural knowledge and involvement at St. John's
University.
Alpha Mentoring Program -
Sponsored by the Department of Student Life, Alpha Mentoring
Program is a year-long academic mentoring program that uses team
mentoring and peer leadership to help the first-year students
enhance academic excellence, manage the isolation, confusion and
frustrations often encountered during their first year in college.
Through Alpha Mentoring Program, the first-year students have the
opportunity to receive peer mentoring from experienced St. John’s
sophomores, juniors, or seniors; and to participate in a host of
academic and co- and extra-curricular activities.
Peer Diversity Education -
Sponsored by the Department of Student Life, the Diversity Peer
Education program is designed to educate and sensitize students to
the diversity of the University community. In order to
educate our students about multiculturalism and increase an
appreciation for diversity, the Program strives to establish
presentations on social justice and diversity issues, such as
stereotyping, discrimination, ethnicity, cultural racism, religious
prejudice, sexism, ableism, and classism among all people, rather
than just promoting one culture, race, and/or religion.
