Student Conduct

Mission
The Office of Student Conduct exists to help create and foster, in partnership with others, an educational environment committed to the ideals of student learning and civic responsibility.  The Office of Student Conduct will facilitate the social, intellectual, ethical and spiritual development of its students by adjudicating violations of the University’s Student Code of Conduct. The Office of Student Conduct remains true to the University’s Catholic and Vincentian mission by honoring the ideals of student development and adjudicating in a fashion that is not punitive but developmental.

The Office of Student Conduct supports and complements the academic mission of the University by educating students about appropriate behavior and by fostering a community in which academic pursuits can be achieved.  The system is based on the assumption that students and recognized groups have the capacity to assume responsibility for their own behavior and that the university has the responsibility and authority to establish an internal structure for the enforcement of its policies and procedures, all of which promotes a vibrant academic community. The system is an educational tool with two main objectives:
• to hold students and recognized groups accountable for unacceptable and inappropriate behavior which damages our community;
• to sanction and redirect those behaviors deemed unacceptable and inappropriate by the university;

The Office of Student Conduct strives to address unacceptable and inappropriate behavior in a manner that informs students and guides them toward a greater understanding of the University’s mission, personal accountability, responsible decision-making and the personal and professional expectations of St. John’s graduates once they leave our community.

The Office of Student Conduct fulfills its mission by providing programs and services that promote the students’ academic, personal, social and spiritual development by:

  • Enforcing all University and residence hall rules and regulations,
  • Educating students about appropriate behaviors and the consequences for unacceptable and/or inappropriate behaviors through the use of critical and reflective cognitive skills.
  • Intervene immediately and effectively when student behavior violates the University’s Student Code of Conduct.
  • Offer supervised educational and service opportunities for students who participate in the operation of the Non-Academic Judicial System.
