Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. was founded on the campus of
Indiana University on January 5, 1911. The Fraternity's fundamental
purpose is achievement.
In the early 1900's, African-American students were actively
dissuaded from attending college. Formidable obstacles were erected
to prevent the few who were enrolled from assimilating into
co-curricular campus life. This ostracism characterized that of
Indiana University in 1911, thus causing Elder W. Diggs, Byron K.
Armstrong, and nine other black students to ignite the dream of
Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity. It was to their credit that 10
strong African-American students turn a dream into a
reality.
The founders sought a formula that would immediately raise the
sights of black collegians and stimulate them to accomplishments
higher than they might have imagined. Fashioning achievement as its
purpose, Kappa Alpha Psi began uniting college men of culture,
patriotism and honor in a bond of fraternity.
Today, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. remains the only Greek
lettered organization with its Alpha Chapter active on the
University's campus.
Established on St. John's University's Queens Campus on April 4,
1982, Richard Webber, Dean Frazer, Walter Reid, Derrick Lawrence,
Eddie Dickson, Garland Boyd, Kenny Delaney, Tony Holstead, Selwyn
Scarborough, and George Edward paved the way for the chapter's
charter in the Spring of 1986.
