Mixed Chorus

Have you ever sung in a chorus or wanted to see what it’s all about?

Join the St. John’s University Mixed Chorus!

"As advisor of Mixed Chorus for the past five years, and most especially, watching them perform at Yankee Stadium, I could not have been more proud of this group of dedicated and committed students who represent the performing arts and our University so well!"

-- Mary Pelkowski, Director of Leadership Development

Now under the direction of Kim Oler, two-time Emmy Award-winning composer and conductor, our choir, which was founded in 1975, is a pillar of the St. John’s Performing Arts program. Administered by the Department of Student Life, our musical repertoire ranges from contemporary Broadway show tunes and popular songs to classic choral masterworks. Our membership is representative of the wonderful diversity of the St. John’s University student body.

Rehearsals
The chorus rehearses once, sometimes twice a week on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons and performs two major concerts a year – the annual Christmas Concert with the Nassau Pops Symphony Orchestra and the year-end Performing Arts Concert. St. John’s University faculty and alumni are invited to join the chorus for our Christmas concert.

During the academic year, the Mixed Chorus sings at local nursing homes and hospitals and at several University events. Every spring Mixed Chorus sings two Sunday services for the internationally-televised Sunday Mass, and in the spring of 2005, we sang the National Anthem at Yankee Stadium, where Jay-Z gave us a big “thumbs-up” from his box on the third base line!

All singers are welcome to attend rehearsals in September to try us on for size, no matter your level of experience. We take pride in training musicians in the art of choral singing and inspire many to keep singing long after they graduate.

A sample of our repertoire:

  • “Endless Night” and “The Circle Of Life”
    from The Lion King
  • “Alleluia” from Shrek 2
  • “Seasons of Love” from Rent
  • “Defying Gravity” from Wicked
  • “Down to the River to Pray” from O Brother, Where Art Thou
  • Handel’s Messiah

Grants are available for those in need based upon excellence and level of commitment.
