Campus Activities (CA) provides students with a variety of
programming and leadership opportunities throughout the year.
We know from research that a student who gets involved in more
likely to feel connected to the institution and hence will be more
likely to continue through graduation.
Why Get Involved?
GRAPE!
While student involvement in activities may on the surface appear
to be unrelated to the prospect of starting a career, it is
important to consider the benefits an individual may gain.
Growth: Learning new skills in
management, human relations, accepting responsibilities, learning
to recognize and transfer skills.
Recognition: Special benefits
and privileges, recognition from others, personal satisfaction
Achievement: Seeing the
achievement of a goal, personal development, building a strong
resume, satisfaction of having an impact on the campus.
Participation: Opportunity to
apply new skills, management groups, being involved in a program or
event.
Enjoyment: Making new friends,
having fun, satisfaction for accomplishment and serving others.
How to Get
Involved?
With well over 100 student organizations on campus, there are
endless ways for students to get involved with campus life. By
participating in a number of social, cultural, political,
spiritual, and academic organizations, students will ultimately
achieve an enhanced university experience.
Activity
Fairs
Each semester, we kick things off by hosting an activity fair which
highlights the kinds of involvements available to the students. In
the fall, this is a huge event on the Great Lawn where student
organizations, teams and offices host tables to inform and recruit
new students. The spring event is held in the University Center,
and features local DJ talent to keep the students moving from table
to table.
MVP Program- Most Valuable
Participant
The St. John's Reward Program is a passport program to Student
Engagement. Its mission is to increase school spirit and
tradition while also creating excitement and attendance at all
athletic events and division wide Student Affairs programs.
Events sponsored by the Division of Student Affairs now give you
the opportunity to earn points for rewards. These events include
Athletic Games, Redzone Student Section Away Trips, Campus
Activities, Commuter Programs, Weekend Events, Campus Recreations,
Fitness Classes, Career Center Workshops, LEADership Development
Programs, Academic Lectures, Student Wellness and More!
Simply by attending these events and swiping your Storm Card,
points will automatically be earned and can be tracked by visiting
UIS. Once you earn 25 points you will begin to earn free
gifts.
Commuter
Connections
Designed to create a common place for commuter students to meet,
socialize, and share issues and concerns, Commuter Connections are
offered throughout the year. The fall semester features a Commuter
Appreciation Day, while the spring semester hosts an entire
Commuter Appreciation Week. A series of monthly forums are held for
students to address administration and other students about their
needs and concerns as a commuting student.
Leadership
Development
L.E.A.D. (Leadership, Education And Development) is a non-credit
program of individual and group training, workshops and overnight
conferences dedicated to helping St. John’s University students
interested in developing and enhancing their leadership skills.
Sponsored by the Division of Student Affairs, L.E.A.D
complements the student’s education by teaching skills and
providing students with the tools necessary for effective
leadership. Through the student’s involvement in L.E.A.D., he
or she will begin to hone their knowledge and understanding of time
management, decision-making, proper planning, critical thinking,
oral presentation and much more.
Programming
Boards
There are three major programming organizations on campus that are
primarily responsible for providing higher-level events and
activities for the campus community. These include the Student
Programming Board (SPB), Haraya- the Pan-African Student Coalition
and the Residence Student Association (RSA). These groups promote
collaboration and creativity and are always looking for new ideas
and new members.
