Frequently Asked Questions

What does it mean to be “eligible to participate?”
To ensure that you are eligible to participate in the Housing Selection Process, you need to meet all of the deadlines and requirements outlined in this packet. Eligible means that you have completed the outlined steps and cleared academic and student conduct review and are qualified for possible participation in the housing selection process. This does NOT guarantee that you will be assigned an appointment time or housing assignment during the Housing Selection Daze.

How do I apply for a single room?
If you wish to be considered for a single room, you must pay your housing deposit, meet eligibility requirements for outlined in packet and if selected to participate in the housing application process choose Room/Single Selection option and indicate single room on the Housing Selection Application, due no later than 4:00 p.m. EST on Monday, March 11, 2013.

If I pay my Housing Deposit earlier than Friday, February 8th, do I get any special priority?
The date you pay your deposit does not matter as long as you have paid your housing deposit by the February 8, 2013 3:00 p.m. EST deadline and electronically submitted your online housing application by the March 11, 2013 deadline.  Paying a deposit or turning in your application earlier than the posted deadlines will not grant you any special priority during the Housing Selection Process.

My requested roommate is in one of the categories listed in the above question. Does that mean I will get selected to participate automatically?
No. If your requested roommate is in one of those above categories, it is possible that they will be selected to participate in housing selection and you will not.

Will there be any preview nights to see floor plans before housing selection?
If you are interested in viewing floor plans or our 360 Virtual Tour, before housing selection, please visit our University Housing page at: http://www.stjohns.edu/campus/queens/residencelife/halls

What is a “Proxy” form?
A Proxy form is a form that gives permission to another student to choose a room for you. Students who are studying abroad or who cannot physically be present during Housing Selection will need to give permission, by filling out a Proxy form, to another student who can choose a room.

Can I get my deposit back?
If you are not selected to participate in the selection process you must visit the Office of Residence Life in Donovan Hall, Room C16, to fill out a Deposit Refund Request Form by Thursday, May 1, 2013. If you wish to decline your housing you must request your deposit to be credited back to your St. John’s Student Account on or before Thursday, May 1, 2013.  Housing deposits are non-refundable after Thursday, May 1, 2013.
