Housing Options

The communities near St. John’s University offer students a number of housing options.  It is important to determine the type of rental that you will want BEFORE contacting landlords or realtors.  Proper planning will save you a great deal of time and effort.

• Apartment Buildings
Large and small apartment buildings can be found in the St. John's University area. 
• Houses
Single, two and three family houses are all common housing types in areas surrounding St. John's University Houses tend to contain larger units, usually two bedrooms or more.  Always make sure you know what the maximum occupancy of the house you are renting.
• Rooms for Rent
Rooms for rent in apartments and houses may already have existing tenants or owners who are seeking a roommate to fill a vacancy.  The person moving into this situation may be required to sign a lease, which is recommended and provide a security deposit.
• Rooms in Boarding Houses
Rooms in boarding houses are generally rented by the month, although some are available on a weekly basis.  Tenants may or may not have coking facilities, a private entrance or a private bath.  Most rooms are for single occupancy.  In some cases tenants may share a house with the owners of the property in which they are renting.
• Room and Board (meals) in exchange for work
Services such childcare, eldercare, tutoring, house keeping, chauffeuring and general maintenance may be exchanged for room and board.  10 to 15 hours of work per week are generally required.  Special instructions may apply in these situations (such as no overnight guests or no smoking), so be sure you know what is permitted and expected of you before you move in.
