Guide to Off-Campus Living

The prospect of living on your own off campus can seem overwhelming and a bit intimidating.  The Office of Residence Life has put this resource together in order to help make this process as smooth and as easy as possible.  If you are in need of any assistance during this process please feel free to contact your Residence Director, the Office of Residence Life or the Department of Student Life.

Traditionally, renting an apartment is the most popular housing option. Throughout this document housing options will often be referred to as apartment(s).  It is important to keep in mind that other housing options may be available that include apartment/house shares, sublets, and basement or attic rooms, etc.

There are typically hundreds of different apartments/living options available in the New York metropolitan area at any given time.  The main sources for open apartments are print media (i.e. newspapers, magazines) and online services.  Both usually provide housing descriptions and contact information.  An easy way to get an idea of local apartments that may be available at any given time is to leaf through the “Classifieds” section of the local newspapers and/or log onto the internet and type “apartments” into your favorite search engine.  You may also find housing through local realtors and local apartment complexes themselves, though make sure you ask them about their fees.  Please visit the Office of Residence Life for a list of local rentals.
