Working On Campus

  1. Where do you go to find a job on campus?
    If you are a student who is interested in employment on campus you should:
    1. Review the  Guide to Student Employment.
    2. Visit the Student Employment Job Postings list (see below).
    3. Complete the Student Employment Application (refer to instructions below).
    4. If you need assistance please call or stop by the Office of Human Resources on the Queens Campus Monday through Friday between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. (3 p.m. on Friday) and speak to the Student Worker Coordinator about the position in which you are interested.
    5. Review the  Student Worker Handbook, designed to assist you, the student, by giving you clear, concise, information you will need to be successful as a student worker.
       
  2. Where is the Office of Human Resources?.
    The Office of Human Resources is located in Chiang Ching Kuo Hall, Queens campus.
     
  3. What is Federal Work Study?
    The Federal Work-Study program is a form of self-help financial assistance available to college students.  The program funds part-time employment opportunities for both on and off-campus jobs, thereby providing eligible students with the ability to earn money to offset some college expenses.
     
  4. Who is eligible?
    Eligibility for the Federal Work-Study program is determined by the Office of Student Financial Services and is based upon financial need.  To be considered for Federal Work Study, you must be an undergraduate or graduate student and must file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
     
  5. What is the Pay?
    Presently the rate of pay for new work-study students is $7.60/hr and $7.85/hr for returning students.  All work-study students are paid bi-weekly by check or direct deposit.  While school is in session students are permitted to work a maximum of twenty hours a week.  During school breaks students may work full-time, based upon availability of FWS funds and departmental need.

    To access and complete the Student Employment Application:

    Log onto St. John’s Central with your User Name and Password.

    1. Click the secure University Information System (UIS) link.
    2. On the Student Information System page, select Student and Financial Aid.
    3. Scroll down to the bottom of the list and select Student Employment Application.
    4. Click the job posting link to review all open positions.
    5. You may enter up to 3 different job IDs and continue by answering the required questions.
    6. When you have finished, click the Accept button at the bottom of the form.
       
  7. Federal Work Study: Where Can You Work?
    On-Campus
    Students opting to apply for the on-campus work-study program may be placed in one of the departments on-campus and take advantage of the convenience and flexibility of the on-campus program.  Open positions and applications are posted on St. John's University’s website at www.stjohns.edu.  At the bottom of the page click onWork at St. John’s, then click on Student Employment from the list of options on the left.

    Off-Campus
    Students interested in the off-campus work-study program may choose to apply to one of the following:

    America Reads Program
    This program involves tutoring children grades 1-3, if interested contact the America Reads Office at (718) 990-5557     

    Jumpstart Programs
    This program involves tutoring preschool children, if interested contact the Jumpstart Office at (718) 990-2662    

    After School All-Stars-NY
    This program involves teaching our inner city youth (various positions), if interested, contact the ASASNY Office at (718) 990-6416.
     
  8. When can I start working?
    Student’s can begin working as early as July 1, 2011.  Once the student completes the application, submits all necessary documentation and completes the Federal Work-Study Agreement, you may begin to work.

    Freshman:
    Must visit Office of Human Resources to complete the application and agreement form.
    Queens campus students can complete an application at the Office of Human Resources located in the CCK building.
    Staten Island and Manhattan campus students can apply directly with the individual departments
    .   
    Continuing Students: (must be pre-registered for fall 2011)
    Must obtain the Agreement form by following the steps listed below:
    • Log onto St. John's UIS (University Information System) by providing your St. John’s User ID and six-digit PIN NUMBER
    • Click on Financial Aid option
    • Click on My Eligibility option
    • Click on Student Requirements option.
    • Click on Select Aid year and select appropriate academic year
    • Click on Obtain Federal College Work-Study Grant Agreement on-line under the Outstanding Requirements column
    • Print out agreement form.  Complete and sign agreement as instructed.
       
  9. How do I monitor my Work-Study Grant?
    Follow the steps listed below to monitor amount of work-study on our University Web site.
    • Log onto St. John's UIS (University Information System) by providing your St. John’s User ID and six-digit PIN NUMBER
    • Click on the Financial Aid option
    • Click on My Award Information
    • Click on Award History
    • Select the Current Academic Year
    • Under the funds column locate Federal Work-Study; subtract “paid to date” from “amount” to calculate your amount remaining

      Please Note:
      Awarding of Federal work-study does not guarantee you will get a job.  There are a limited number of jobs available so the earlier you submit your application the greater your chances are for getting a job.
      Federal Work-Study earnings are considered taxable income, and you may be required to file a tax return.  Your Work-Study is a Federal grant, and you may not earn more than what you have been determined to be eligible for.
      A student must maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or better and complete 12 credits per semester to participate in the work-study program.  If your cumulative GPA falls below a 2.0 or you do not maintain 12 credits while working you can be terminated from employment.
      Due to limited availability, all students are required to respond by 30 days after the start of classes or their grant offer will automatically be canceled.
