Student Health Services

  1. What does Student Health Services provide?
    Treatment for symptoms of the flu, colds, allergies, GI upset, minor abrasions and burns. Health counseling is also available, along with a wide variety of educational pamphlets that provide basic information on various health topics. The locations of local pharmacies and health care facilities can be obtained from this office.
    A physician is available to see all St. John’s University students exclusively Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoons during the semester.
     
  2. Do you need an appointment?
     Students who wish to see the physician or dietician must schedule an appointment by calling Student Health Services at (718) 990-6360 or coming directly to the office, located in DaSilva Hall (Queens).
     
  3. Is there a charge?
     There is no charge for any care received in Student Health Services. However, if a referral is made to an outside agency, the student will have to pay a fee to that agency and/or use his/her health insurance coverage.

  4. What happens in an emergency on-campus? 
     In the case of an on-campus emergency where you cannot come to the Health Center, or when the office is not open,  contact the Office of Public Safety, ext. 6281 (Queens) or ext. 4487 (Staten Island). They will be able to assist and contact an ambulance as necessary.
     
  5. Who can be treated in the Health Center?
    Students, faculty, staff, administrators and visitors can all be treated in the Health Center. However, they must be 18 years of age or older. Any individual has the right to refuse treatment.
     
  6. Is treatment in the Health Center confidential?
     Yes. All information contained in documentation such as physicals, immunization records and medical histories as well as any services provided are confidential. Information is not given or sent to anyone unless the office has received your written authorization or a lawfully issued subpoena.
     
  7. Does the University offer medical insurance?
     Students not covered under a parent or guardian’s health insurance have the opportunity to purchase medical insurance at the beginning of each semester.  Applications are mailed directly to all students enrolled at St. John’s University. Applications are also on the insurance company’s website, www.universityhealthplans.com.
    All students living in the residence halls or University housing and all international students must have health insurance.

    Students who are covered under a parent or guardian’s insurance (including an HMO), are strongly advised to contact their insurance provider to familiarize themselves with that company’s procedures for obtaining health care while away from home or in an emergency
