Preparation and Disclosure of Crime Statistics

The St. John’s University Department of Public Safety prepares this report to comply with the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Crime Statistics Act. This report is prepared in cooperation with the local law enforcement agencies surrounding our campuses, Housing and Residential Services, the Judicial Affairs Officer, the Division of Business Affairs, and the Division of Student Affairs.  Each entity provides updated information on their educational efforts and programs to comply with the Act.

Campus crime, arrest and referral statistics include those reported to the St. John’s Department of Public Safety, designated campus officials (including but not limited to student life, resident life, judicial affairs advisors to students /student organizations and athletic coaches), and local law enforcement agencies.  These statistics may also include crimes that have occurred in private residences or businesses and is not required by law.  New York State Penal Law Section 265.25 and the New York State Department of Education requires prompt, mandatory reporting to the local law enforcement agency by the health care practitioners (such as those at Student Health) when they provide medical services to a person they know or reasonably suspects is suffering from wounds inflicted by a firearm or is a result or assaultive or abusive conduct.  Department of Counseling and Psychological Services staff inform their clients of the procedures to report crime to the Department of Public Safety on a voluntary or confidential basis, should they feel it is in the best interest of the client.  A procedure is in place anonymously capture crime statistics disclosed confidentially during such a session.

Each year, an email notification is made to all enrolled students and employees that provides the website to access this report.  Copies of the report may also be obtained at the Department of Public Safety on all campuses.  All prospective employees may obtain a copy from Human Resources and the website address will be attached to St. John’s University employment applications.
