Campus Law Enforcement Policy

St. John’s University Department of Public Safety officers have the authority to ask persons for identification and to determine whether individuals have lawful business at St. John’s University. Public Safety officers have the authority to issue parking tickets, which are billed to financial accounts of students, faculty, and staff.  Safety officers do not possess law enforcement authority. Criminal incidents are referred to the local police who have jurisdiction on campus. The Department of Public Safety at St. John’s University maintains a highly professional working relationship with the New York City Police Department and the Suffolk County Policy Department, but does not have written agreements with these agencies.  Due to the University’s multiple campuses, under normal circumstances the Department of Public Safety does not interface with state police, and there is no written agreement with this agency.  All crime victims and witnesses are strongly encouraged to immediately report the crime to Department of Public Safety and the appropriate police agency. Prompt reporting will assure timely warning notices on-campus and timely disclosure of crime statistics.
