Fire Safety Systems

The on-campus residence facilities at St. John's University Queens Campus are include the (6) Residence Halls in the Residence Village (John Cardinal O’Connor Hall, Helen and Hugh L. Carey Hall, Century Hall, DaSilva Hall, Hollis Hall and Donovan Hall) as well as the Founders’ Village Townhouses and St. Vincent’s Hall.

All of the above mentioned housing facilities are equipped with a modern, fully addressable interior fire alarm system, which is monitored 24 hours per day, 7 days per week.  In addition, all are equipped with automatic sprinkler systems.  These systems are tested at least twice per year.

The on-campus Residence Halls are equipped with emergency generators that will operate during a power outage.  These generators will operate life safety systems, including all fire safety equipment, sprinkler systems, emergency lighting and emergency exit doors.

Mandatory Fire Drills

Residence Hall fire drills are conducted at least four times per year, and at least once during each semester (Spring, Summer and Fall).  Fire drills are conducted in our academic classroom and research facilities at least three times per year.  These supervised fire drills are performed jointly by the St. John's University Fire Safety and Public Safety Departments.

Fire Safety Policies

St. John's University strives to maintain a safe environment that is free from potential fire hazards.  The Fire Safety Policy (Policy No. 1011) enjoins the entire University community to cooperate with our fire protection programs which are designed to save lives and protect property.  The Fire Safety Officers increase campus fire safety awareness of both students and employees by conducting periodic training on essential fire safety elements. The officers conduct frequent fire safety inspections across all University buildings.  They are trained to recognize hazardous conditions and take appropriate action before such conditions result in a fire emergency.

Fire Safety Future Improvement Plans

Increase the number of Fire Drills conducted at the Manhattan campus residences to (4) times per year.
