The most decorated student-athlete in Red Storm
history, women’s basketball stand-out
Da’Shena Stevens ’12TCB has been selected as BIG EAST finalist
for NCAA Woman of the Year.
The annual
award honors graduating female athletes who distinguish
themselves in academics, service and leadership as well as sports
throughout their college career. From 429 nominees nationwide, the
NCAA will choose the top 10 from each division. A national winner
will be announced in October.
"We are all really proud of Da'Shena for what she accomplished on
the court at St. John's and, more importantly, for what she was
able to do off the court—in the classroom and the community,” said
head coach
Joe Tartamella. “Her commitment over the past four years
brought us to new heights as a program, and this is truly an honor
for her and for St. John's."
Stevens began her St. John’s career as BIG
EAST Freshman of the Year and concluded it as the league’s
Scholar Athlete of the Year. Her many honors include WBCA Region I
All-American (twice); Preseason All-BIG EAST selection and All-BIG
EAST honoree (three times); and Naismith Trophy Early-Season watch
list (three times). She was a three-time, first-team All-Mets
selection and the 2010 Metropolitan Player of the Year.
The Stamford, Conn., native ultimately ranked in six of St. John’s
top-five record lists — fifth in all-time scoring (1,515 points);
third in rebounds (815); fourth in field goals made (579); second
in free throws (354); and fifth in field goal attempts (1,305). The
career leader in free-throw attempts (623), she shot 71.0 percent
in the free-throw line in 2011-12.
Exemplifying the traits of the scholar-athlete, Stevens was named
to the BIG EAST All-Academic Team for four consecutive seasons. She
received St. John’s Michael Pisano Award for earning a GPA of 3.0
or higher for seven semesters in a row.
