The Board of Trustees at the December 15, 2004 meeting has
approved these policies. They are subject to future revisions and
will be reviewed by the Board annually.
Section A: General Provisions
- The sanctions listed below are imposed by the University to
hold students accountable for misconduct. Ordinarily, previous
offenses will be considered by officials in determining
penalties.
- Failure to comply with imposed sanctions subjects the student
to further sanction including expulsion.
Section B: Sanctions
- Formal Warning. Written notification to the student that
wrongful conduct must be stopped immediately and that continuation
or repetition of such conduct will be grounds for more severe
disciplinary action.
- Fines. Sums to be paid by the student to the University or to
another specified body. Failure to pay fines will result in the
denial of a final grade report and denial of registration for the
subsequent semester (including summer sessions).
- Restitution. Reimbursement for injury or damage to another
person or the University or to their/its property. Students will be
required to settle their account within a reasonable time to be
determined by the Judicial Officer. Students delinquent in making
restitution face additional sanction.
- Required Community Work. Assignment of a specific number of
hours of community service work to be accomplished in a specified
time.
- Disciplinary Probation. Written statement placing the student
on notice that further improper behavior may result in the
student’s suspension or expulsion from the University. Disciplinary
probation continues for a specified period ranging from the
duration of the semester to a full year. While on disciplinary
probation, the student may be subject to some or all of the
following conditions:
i. May not be permitted to receive special funds
ii. May not participate in extracurricular activities
iii. May not hold or stand for election to office in Student
Government or other leadership positions
iv. May not participate on teams (including intramural teams)
v. May not serve on groups representing the University.
- Suspension. Exclusion from class and examinations and
University property for the time specified. The student is
restricted from campus and may not participate in any functions on
or off campus. The period of suspension will not exceed two years.
Tuition and fees are forfeited. A notice of suspension is included
in the student’s official record. At the end of the suspension, the
student must meet with the Senior Student Affairs Officer or
designee who will determine reinstatement to the University in
his/her sole discretion. A second suspension from the University
which is either not appealed or is sustained on appeal, will be
treated as a recommendation to the Executive Vice President that
the student be expelled from the University.
- Expulsion. Permanent severance of relationship between student
and University, including any employment relationship. The student
may not attend classes or take any examinations and must vacate
University property by the effective date of expulsion. The
individual may not thereafter visit on the University grounds. Only
the President/Executive Vice President may impose the sanction of
expulsion. A record of expulsion is placed in the student’s
official record. Expelled students forfeit any tuition or fees they
may have paid and are not permitted to apply to St. John’s
University for student admission or employment at any time in the
future.
