Procedure for Psychological Disturbance

The University has full authority to discontinue the enrollment of a student who is mentally disturbed to such a degree that an academic program cannot be successfully pursued, or whose conduct impedes the work of other students, faculty or administrative offices. The decision shall be made by a Special Cases Committee including the Director of the Counseling Center, the Chief Student Affairs Officer, University Psychiatric Consultant, Dean of Students on the student's campus and the Dean of the school or college in which the student is registered. The advice of others may be sought. There is no appeal from this decision. The process by which the student may request permission to enroll at a subsequent period will be reported to the student.

Pending action by the Special Cases Committee, the status of a student shall not be altered, nor shall the student's right to be present on the campus and to attend class be suspended, except, when in the judgment of the Chief Student Affairs Officer or designee, the student's conduct is an imminent threat to the physical or emotional safety of others, or to the student, or to property.

A student who seeks readmission at a subsequent period shall meet with a professional staff member appointed by the Director of the Counseling Center for evaluation. A written report shall be obtained from the outside professional who has treated the student in the interim. This report will be reviewed with the University Psychiatric Consultant. An appointment with the University Psychiatric Consultant may or may not be required upon completion of the above steps; a decision will be made regarding readmission; and the student seeking readmission will be so informed.
