St. John's Head Coach Yury Gelman and Former Red Storm Fencer Keeth Smart Lead U.S. Sabre Team To Silver At 2008 Olympics

Queens, NY - The U.S. men's sabre team captured its first fencing medal since 1984 in the team championship, Sunday, winning the silver medal against France.  St. John's University Head Coach Yury Gelman coached the sabre squad, which included former Red Storm fencer Keeth Smart, Tim Morehouse, and Jason Rogers, to wins against Hungary and Russia to get to the gold medal match at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.  

The U.S. trailed France throughout the gold medal match, but rallied late by narrowing the gap, 44-37. The French however, would eventually prevail when Julien Pillet, made the final touch to win the gold, while the U.S. men's sabre team took the silver medal.
