Mark "Action" Jackson was probably the greatest assist man in
St. John's history. Over the course of his four seasons with the
team, he totaled 738 assists. Named to the BIG EAST All-Rookie team
his first season, Jackson dished out 108 assists as a freshman.
He was the "sixth man" on St. John's Final Four team, ranking
third on the team in assists with 109 and second in field goal
percentage with .564. He emerged as one of the premier point guards
in the nation his junior season, dealing a NCAA record 328 assists.
His 150 assists in BIG EAST games was also a league record. Jackson
proved to be a capable scorer as he averaged 11.3 points per
game.
He was named first-team All-BIG EAST and All-Metropolitan and
was an AP honorable mention All-American. In his senior season,
Jackson was named the BIG EAST Conference's Defensive Player of the
Year. He was a second team All-America selection by AP, UPI and
Basketball Weekly. He was the co-recipient of the Haggerty Award
given to the MVP of the Metropolitan area and was a first-team
All-BIG EAST selection. Jackson averaged 18.9 points per game his
senior season and finished his career with 1,328 points.
