Learning Readiness, Poverty, and Literacy in Rural Uganda

Project Summary:
Dr. Valeda Dent has spent many years working in rural Uganda exploring the impact of the rural village library in a number of rural communities including Kitengesa, Kabubbu, Mpigi, and Ggulama. The research is in collaboration with the Uganda Community Libraries Association (UgCLA) and Friends of African Village Libraries. There are currently several key areas of exploration, each initially influenced by and related to the role of the rural village library:

  1. Learning Readiness
  2. General Rural Library Impact on the Community
  3. Relationship Between Children's Art, Learning Readiness, and Self-Representation
  4. Gender, Familial and Social Roles
  5. Caregiver Impact on Learning Readiness

Dr. Dent is seeking a highly motivated research assistant to participate in the evaluation of outcomes from these studies as well as discussion about future direction. This project also features the opportunity to be a co-author on a peer-reviewed paper (depending on the nature of the work). More information can be found here: rurallibrariesresearchnetwork.com

Qualifications:

Applicants should have an interest in working on an international research project focusing on the following areas:

  1. Learning Readiness
  2. General Rural Library Impact on the Community
  3. Relationship Between Children's Art, Learning Readiness, and Self-Representation
  4. Gender, Familial and Social Roles
  5. Caregiver Impact on Learning Readiness

Applicants should have an interest in qualitative and quantitative research methods. Qualitative coding experience would be a plus but is not required. Applicants should be able to work independently. Experience with SPSS is a plus but not required. Should have extensive experience with Excel.

Job Responsibilities:
Collate and organize data, clean existing data sets, participate in qualitative coding in preparation for publication, conduct literature and research reviews of professional publications, handle upkeep of related research website.
