Midnight Run Clothes Drive

October 9, 2015

Getting those coats, sweaters or sweatpants out of the closet already?  It is time to accept the reality that summer is gone and winter is approaching soon. It is also an opportunity to think of those who experience the unfortunate circumstances of being homeless. Often times we take our homes, our clothes, and food for granted, yet there are others who can’t count on those blessings.

Pope Francis in his Apostolic Exhortation,  EVANGELII GAUDIUM, reminds us that “a globalization of indifference has developed. Almost without being aware of it, we end up being incapable of feeling compassion at the outcry of the poor, weeping for other people’s pain, and feeling a need to help them, as though all this were someone else’s responsibility and not our own.” (APOSTOLIC EXHORTATION, EVANGELII GAUDIUM. 54.)

For that reason, Campus Ministry is inviting everyone to see if there are “extra” items that could be shared with those who are experiencing homelessness.  The main target for this drive will be jeans and sweaters. Jeans are a very high demand during Midnight Runs because they last longer and are reusable. If you have wearable jeans that you are considering donating, this is the opportunity. Other items such as shoes, toiletries, and sweatpants are also needed.  Because the majority of the people we encounter during Midnight Run are men, we try to focus on men's clothing but also welcome women’s clothing as well.

Midnightrrun.org is a very challenging program where students will have a hands-on encounter with men and women who are homeless in our own New York City. Participating in the program is like seeing the other side of the coin, the side that most New Yorkers ignore every day.  Students prepare and bring bags with fresh made sandwiches, snacks, water and also clothing to the brothers and sisters sleeping on the sidewalks or benches in the city. Because this program takes place from Monday through Thursday, there is a great need for donations.

Drop off places on Queens Campus are:

  • Campus Ministry Office in St. Thomas More Church
  • Campus Ministry Office in Marillac 239.
