What a Difference a Day Makes
Every year, the St. John’s community—students, staff, alumni, administrators, and faculty—join together in the name of service to kick off Founder’s Week. University Service Day occurs on the Saturday closest to the feast of St. Vincent de Paul: a very apropos day to engage in community service and honor our Vincentian tradition. Participation in Service Day has grown steadily since its inception in 2002.
In that first year, 123 participants served at 12 community locations. Last year, more than 2,000 students and employees participated in service at over 110 sites.

If you have not visited the Employee Assistance Program (EAP) website, then you are missing out on a wealth of services that can simplify your life and support you and your family in your time of need. The EAP can help you find any number of resources in your area including handymen or elder care options. Their service overview provides a breakdown of the different types of services that are offered. You may also call the 24-hour helpline at 1-800-227-2195 or visit the website E4 Health and log on with username “SJU” and password “guest.” It’s FREE and CONFIDENTIAL!
Benefits Open Enrollment
The Employee Benefits Office will communicate information and instructions about this year's open enrollment period, which will run from 11/1/2016 – 11/30/2016. As a reminder, SJU uses the BSWIFT online portal to process benefit changes and open enrollment. Log on to sju.bswift.com to review your benefits in preparation for the Open Enrollment. If you are planning to keep the benefits that you currently have, the Open Enrollment experience will be quick and easy. The only benefits that MUST be selected this year are Health Care and Dependent Care Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA); all other benefits will remain the same if you do not desire to make a change.
Know Your Employment Rights
The University has posted updated information to its website on the federal minimum wage, as well as the Employee Polygraph Protection Act. To view these updates and other posters, visit our Employment Posters page.
Several times a year, the Department Showcase Series features a different University department and highlights its programs, services, accomplishments and goals. By participating in these showcases, employees gain an improved sense of the connections that exist among St. John’s departments, colleges, and student services. You can also earn credit toward your professional development certificate!
View the slideshows for all past department showcases.
If there is a department that you would like to see featured, you may contact HR Services. Upcoming showcases will be listed on the Training and Development calendar.

Remembering Two Angels
As the Resident Safety Coordinator, I was lucky enough to have had two very special student workers on my team, Tiarah Poyau and Arshell Dennis III. Sadly they lost their lives to senseless violence within three weeks of each other.
