Original Message Communicating This Program:
Over the course of the past year, the University community has endured the loss of several of our colleagues across multiple departments and disciplines. This has been a difficult time for many of us, as we all cope with loss and grief in different ways.
As members of the St. John's community, our overall well-being is important to how we work together in support of our students and our mission. We are a close community with strong relationships, often spanning many years. Often, we don't think of ourselves as needing assistance to deal with loss and grief, but sometimes it can help to come together and explore our feelings and talk about the impact of the loss on us, both personally and professionally.
In acknowledgement of this stressful time, we are offering affected departments a series of dedicated support group sessions that will be facilitated by our external employee assistance counselor. In addition, we will organize a general support group session on both the Queens and Staten Island campuses. These sessions will focus on different types of loss; what to expect physically and emotionally when mourning; myths about the stages of grief; the effects of delayed grief; and developing coping skills.
The general bereavement session on the Queens campus will now be held as follows:
Friday, February 7, 2014, at 11 a.m. (for approximately one hour)
University Center, Training Room
