At St. John’s University, playing golf is usually more than simply engaging in friendly competition while trying to make that elusive hole-in-one.

And so when more than 100 alumni and friends gathered on Thursday, October 7, 2010 at the beautiful Nassau Country Club in Glen Cove, they doing something that went well beyond a relaxing day of golf with friends. They were taking part in the annual Alumni Golf Outing, a traditional and highly popular event organized to generate funds to support the Long Island Alumni Golf Outing Scholarship Fund for St. John’s most deserving students.

“It’s wonderful to see so many St. John’s alumni and friends coming together to enjoy a great day of golf,” noted William G. Schaeffer ’73CBA, Director, Office of Alumni Relations. “When you realize that they’re here to support scholarships in a very real way, it’s just another indication of how our alumni have always responded to the call to help out the University’s current students.”

This year’s honoree was John J. Desmond ’74CBA, Partner-in-Charge of the Long Island office of Grant Thornton and a member of their Partnership Board. For this loyal alumnus, being honored by St. John’s was “…better than I could have imagined. It was a spectacular day, and the camaraderie between friends was wonderful.”

“It was a beautiful day to be out with so many friends and other alumni,” agreed Dominick Vicari ’80CBA. “There really is no better way to spend a Thursday afternoon, and especially for such an important cause. This is one of the events I most look forward to every year.”

The opportunity to put their Vincentian values into action in a way that would directly impact current and future St. John’s students made participation in the Golf Outing even more enjoyable for the alumni, many of whom have been actively involved with the planning and implementation of the event for many years.

Former honoree John Adamovich ’75CBA, ’88HON believes that the alumni have a personal commitment to supporting the University that means so much to them.  He is aware that many alumni came from families that didn’t have a great deal of money, a reality that continues to be a factor for today’s students. He is happy to do what he can to ensure that St. John’s current students have the same opportunity for a good education as he did.

“We’re truly blessed to be able to support such an important cause,” he said. “Today was a wonderful day with great weather, great golf and a great honoree. The event was very successful.”

For Richard Ziezig ’76C, his participation was a chance to share in the Vincentian mission that has served as the foundation of the University for more than 140 years. “It was a perfect day to come out and support a wonderful cause,” he said. “St. John’s has such a great mission, and being able to help raise money for scholarships that are so important to help young men and women advance themselves is just great.”
