Alumni Enjoy a Special Night at the Meadowlands

August 17, 2010

There’s a unique excitement associated with harness racing that’s unmatched in any other sport. So when over 40 alumni and friends of St. John’s University gathered for a Night at the Racetrack at the Meadowlands in East Rutherford, New Jersey on Saturday, August 14, 2010, everyone knew that they were about to have a memorable time.

Hosted by the Northern New Jersey Alumni Chapter, the evening featured a barbeque buffet in a private area exclusively for St. John’s alumni and their families. Guests enjoyed an up-close view of each race while feasting on a variety of tasty selections as they mingled with other alumni in the park-like setting of the famous racetrack.

“We have so many alumni in the New Jersey area,” said Nicholas A. Legakis ’97SVC, ’07MPS, Director, Institutional Advancement, Staten Island. “Over the last few years, we’ve been able to host some great events in different parts of the state to help attract many different alumni. The support has been tremendous!”

“This was a perfect summer evening with great friends and tremendous support from the alumni,” agreed Andre Emont ’79P, ’84GP, Northern New Jersey Alumni Chapter Leader.
“I’m looking forward to continuing this tradition in the future.”

While most of those in attendance were from various areas of New Jersey, a number of alumni from Queens and Brooklyn made the trek to the Garden State. They discovered that it was worth the trip.

“You couldn’t have asked for a better night,” said Brooklyn resident Bob Howe ’73CBA. “The spot and the company were both great!”

Alumni who brought their children to participate in the family nature of the event were happy to see their sons and daughters enjoying themselves, and were looking forward to similar activities in the future. “This is a great venue for the family,” remarked Benjamin Chiang ’97SVC. “I can’t wait for next year.”

It was a night of food, fun and great harness races, and whether they won or lost, at the end of the evening everyone left the racetrack with fond memories of another special St. John’s alumni event.

“I probably lost more than I won,” exclaimed Natalie Dengler ’7Ed, ’76MBA, “but the company was great, which is what really matters. You can’t put a price on that.”
