Staten Island Alumni Enjoy Baseball at its Best

July 28, 2010

True baseball fans know that there’s a special sense of involvement that can only be felt at a minor league game. The connection between the players and the fans becomes even more unique when it’s a game between the Staten Island Yankees and the Brooklyn Cyclones, the respective minor league affiliates of the New York Yankees and New York Mets.

On Sunday, July 26, 2010, 90 alumni and friends of the St. John’s University Staten Island campus cheered for their teams as the “Baby Bombers” hosted the minor league Mets at the Richmond County Bank Ballpark. Those in attendance were treated to an all-you-can-eat buffet of traditional baseball food, including hot dogs, hamburgers and chicken sandwiches.

We always get such a great turnout for this event,” said Nicholas A. Legakis ’97SVC, ’07MPS, Director, Institutional Advancement, Staten Island. “It’s convenient and affordable for families to attend and a great opportunity for so many alumni based in Brooklyn and Staten Island to get together”

“It’s a perfect night,” agreed Patricia Bean ’80CBA, ’88MBA. “There’s really no heat or humidity, my old friends are here and I don’t care who wins. I’m having a wonderful time.”

Alumni not only enjoyed the weather and the ballgame, but took advantage of the opportunity to catch up with other members of their St. John’s family. “Many of my friends are here with their kids, and our kids are friends, just like we were in college,” noted Dennis Annaruma’79CBA. “It’s great spending time like this.”

The two teams played a close game, and it was the Cyclones who finally downed the Yanks with an exciting 3-1 win.

Reflecting pride in his Brooklyn background and expressing affection for St. John’s, Stephen Maresca ’72CBA remarked that there were, “…a lot of nice people here, and it’s a great place to watch a game. This is just another wonderful event that my friends and I have enjoyed this summer, thanks to St. John’s!”
