Activities Abound at Alumni Reunion Celebration 2010

Alumni, family and friends came home to alma mater on Friday, May 21, Saturday, May 22 and Sunday, May 23 for Alumni Reunion Celebration 2010. Events were held on both the Staten Island and Queens campuses and included a wide range of activities that reflected the uniqueness of the St. John’s University experience.

The weekend of celebration began on Friday evening with the Annual Alumni Convocation in St. Thomas More Church, during which 25 exceptional alumni who have distinguished themselves in a variety of ways since graduating from the University were honored with prestigious awards and honorary degrees.

On Saturday, the Alumni Reunion Barbeque and Family Fun Fair opened at 2 p.m. on Staten Island and featured volleyball games, face painting, arts and crafts displays, a magician and an inflatable bouncer, supported by the music of an exciting DJ who kept the party going at full speed. The food, games and attractions that created a carnival atmosphere as everyone enjoyed hours of great outdoor fun.

On the Queens campus, excited alumni and their families arrived well before the 4 p.m. start of the Alumni Reunion Great Lawn Party and Concert, eager to sample exceptional barbeque food while enjoying the carnival rides, rock climbing wall, inflatable bouncers, obstacle course, face painting and a video game wall. Music was in the air throughout the event, provided by talented St. John’s alumnus DJ Jimmy (James A. McGuire '92SVC).

The Alumni Reunion Great Lawn Party and Concert was highlighted by an exciting performance of Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes. More than a few alumni were singing along to the well-known tunes of this outstanding group who have been a fixture in the musical world for decades. At the conclusion of the concert, the evening came to a close with a dazzling fireworks display that lit up the sky over the campus.

“These were real St. John’s parties,” said Bill Schaeffer '73CBA, Director, Office of Alumni Relations. “There was something for everyone, and the fact that so many of our alumni came back is a real indication of how close they feel to the University.”

While everything was happening on-campus, young alumni were enjoying an exclusive evening of socializing and networking at The Park Red Room in Manhattan, one of New York City’s trendiest locations. This fun event for St. John’s recent graduates featured an open bar, hors d’oeuvres, raffles and give-aways exclusively for our young alumni.

Another highlight of Alumni Reunion Celebration 2010 was the Jubilarian Dinner with the President, hosted by St. John’s University President Rev. Donald J. Harrington, C.M. Alumni who were celebrating or have already celebrated the 50th anniversary of their graduation from St. John’s gathered in the D’Angelo Center for an elegant cocktail reception and dinner. A feature of this exclusive event was the presentation of commemorative pins to each alumnus or alumna celebrating the 50th anniversary of his or her graduation.

Alumni Reunion Celebration 2010 concluded on Sunday, May 23 with the Annual Alumni Mass in St. Thomas More Church, followed by the Champagne Brunch with the President in Montgoris Dining Hall, at which the members of the Class of 1970 were presented with a commemorative pin by Fr. Harrington to acknowledge the special milestone of their 40th anniversary.
