A Day of Golf and Good Will

July 20, 2009

A sunny, picture-perfect morning was an ideal beginning for the 30th Annual Staten Island Golf Outing. More than 150 alumni and friends of St. John’s University gathered for a day of golf and dinner at the South Shore Country Club on Wednesday, July 15, 2009.

After a day of golf, attendees enjoyed an outdoor cocktail hour and elegant dinner during which four members of the University community were honored for their dedication to St. John’s Vincentian mission.

Joseph Caldarera '78NDC, Retired Lieutenant, New York City Police Department and Licensed Optician, Medical Eyeglass Center of New Jersey; Joseph Ferreri, Parent, President, Whitehouse Supplies Corporation; Dr. Donna Narducci '75NDC, '78GEd, Associate Dean/Director of Business Programs, Tobin College of Business, Staten Island campus; and Dan Wheeler '77CBA, Owner/President, Office Equipment Company of Staten Island were all recognized for their various professional and personal contributions to St. John’s and to the wider Staten Island community.

“To be recognized by one’s peers is a very gratifying and rewarding experience,” shared Narducci, as she addressed the crowd. “It is great to see so many classmates and colleagues who are supporters of alma mater and my family and guests join me in thanking you for a wonderful evening!”

The outing and dinner, which is held annually to generate funds for student scholarships, was a tremendous success raising more than $20,000 for the John L. F. Sipp/Paul DeStefano Scholarship Fund. To date, 81 St. John’s students have received awards from this scholarship totaling $146,450 in grants. And in the coming academic year, more students will receive aid thanks to the generosity of our donors.

Attendees were pleased with the opportunity to participate in a great day of golf for a cause greater than themselves. Former honoree Jack A. DeSantis, Jr. '85CBA, remarked, “The Office of Institutional Advancement runs the best golf outing on Staten Island. I would never miss it!”
