representative Kerry Darcy provided an overview of St. John's, and
after giving the students an opportunity to introduce themselves,
introduced Andrea Papa, '88SVC, Associate Director, Alumni
Relations, Student Engagement and Regional Programs.
Papa emphasized that the Office of Alumni Relations office is
committed to working with students from the moment they first
become part of the St. John's family. She described the popular
Alumni Insider's View programs in which successful alumni mentor
students seeking career-specific assistance and noted the strength
of the extensive alumni network within the Boston area.
Alumni Paul Leone '85CBA and Danny Parkin '00TCB offered the
accepted students and their families personal insights about the
uniqueness of the St. John's experience.
Parkin noted that he initially came to St. John's to play soccer
as well as pursue his studies. He remarked that he was
fortunate to become involved with alumni who were recruiting
St. John's students, from whom he secured his first job with the
company with whom he remains employed. He also commented
about how successful the University has been, particularly
acknowledging the successful efforts of St. John's University
President Rev. Donald J. Harrington, C.M. to enhance the
University's well-deserved reputation for excellence.
Leone also described his career path, particularly mentioning
how the staff of the Career Center helped him secure his first
position. He also emphasized the strength of the Boston alumni
network and indicated how valuable the chapter has been to him.
Other alumni participants included Jim Nolan '76CBA, Gil Hoss
'65P and Mike Delvin '74L,'70CBA, who shared their valuable
experiences by answering questions and speaking with the students
and families.
Prior to the reception, alumni gathered to learn about the
latest happenings at alma mater and to discuss ideas for future
chapter events.
