Mission
The Schermerhorn Street Committee is committed to building
and cultivating lasting relationships between alumni and St. John’s
University which incorporates the University’s Catholic, Vincentian
and Metropolitan mission.
History
St. John’s Brooklyn campus on Schermerhorn Street opened in 1929
and closed its doors in 1972. During that time the following
schools were housed at the campus:
- College of Arts and Sciences, Borough Hall Division
(1929-42)
- University College (1942-71) Name changed from Borough Hall in
1942
- School of Accounting, Commerce and Finance (1927-33)
- School of Commerce (1934-60) Name changed from School of
Accounting in 1933
- College of Business (1960-71) Name changed again in 1960
- College of Pharmacy and Health Sciencesals (1929-1958)
- School of Law (1925-72) 1925-29 was on Court Street then moved
to Schermerhorn Street
- School of Education (1958-71)
- Nursing Education (1942-58)
- Junior College (now the College of Professional Studies
1962-68)
- School of General Studies (now the College of Professional
Studies 1968-71)
The Schermerhorn Street Committee was established in the summer
of 2006 by committee member M. Carole Schafenberg ’70Ed,
’80GEd.
