Notre Dame College became part of St. John’s University in 1971.
Since that time the Notre Dame College Alumnae Association has kept
the legacy of their own beloved institution alive and well on the
Staten Island campus. Their members get together for a wonderful
homecoming every year.

The Notre Dame College of Staten Island was founded by the
Congregation de Notre Dame of Montreal, Canada, in 1932.
early 1930’s, Herbert Gans and his wife befriended Mother Saint
Egbert, later known as Sister Helen Flynn, a Sister of the
Congregation of Notre Dame. The Gans Family sold their mansion to
the new Notre Dame College, a Catholic undergraduate college for
women. The home was re-named Flynn Hall after the college’s
foundress, Sr. Helen Flynn.
Notre Dame College served the community as a premier women’s
college for nearly 40 years. During the late 1960’s, when it became
difficult for small colleges to survive, Terence Cardinal Cooke,
then Archbishop of the Archdiocese of New York, asked the
Vincentian Fathers of St. John’s University to integrate Notre Dame
College, so that Catholic higher education would remain a vibrant
presence in the Staten Island community and the surrounding

The ideals espoused by Notre Dame College perfectly complemented
the Vincentian values of St. John’s University, and the women who
attended that institution share a special bond with St. John’s

Association established The Notre Dame College Alumnae Association
Sr. Helen Flynn Endowed Scholarship
to provide grants to incoming freshmen planning to pursue a degree
on St. John’s Staten Island campus. Over the years, their ongoing
generosity has impacted the lives of many students who, without
their help, would have been unable to achieve their dream of a St.
