Madeleine D. Brennan graduated in 1973 with a Professional
Diploma from St. John’s The School of Education. During her
teaching career, she taught Algebra and Choral Music. She was
subsequently appointed an Assistant Principal in Queens Village,
and in 1963 was appointed Principal of Dyker Heights Intermediate
School 201 in Brooklyn.
She has been active in numerous professional, civic and
community organizations, including the New York Academy of Public
Education, the Middle School Principals’ Association, the National
Council of Administrative Women in Education, the Dyker Heights
Civic Association, the Bay Ridge Community Council and the Emerald
Society. She has been Chairperson of the Friends of Music of
New York City for 35 years.
Madeleine Brennan has received numerous awards from various
organizations, including the Emerald Society, the Catholic Teachers
Association, the Middle School Principals’ Association, the Music
Teachers Association of New York City and the Lions Club of Bay
Ridge. In 1999 she was named New York City Principal of the
Year by the National Association of Secondary School Principals and
received the St. John’s University Department of Education Award in
2006 for her dedication and service to students within the
Department of Education on the Staten Island campus. Brennan
was named Educator of the Year by the New York State Bar
Association in 2009. She is currently the Senior Principal in
the New York City Department of Education.
