Guests enjoyed a relaxing brunch in a private room at the museum
and had the opportunity to reminisce about their time spent as
students at the University. During the formal program, The
School of Education Dean Jerrold Ross, Ph.D., welcomed attendees
and thanked committee members for their assistance with the
planning of the event as well as others held throughout the year in
commemoration of the School’s 100-year anniversary.
Dean Ross and University Provost Julia Upton, RSM, Ph.D. ’73G,
’75G presented special honorees Dr. Thomas Chadzutko,
Superintendent of Schools, Diocese of Brooklyn and Dr. Catherine
Hickey, Secretary of Education, Archdiocese of New York with The
School of Education Centennial Medal for their outstanding work in
the field of education. Guest speaker, Dr. Patrick McNamara
’94G, Assistant Archivist, Diocese of Brooklyn then discussed the
connection of St. John’s University’s Catholic mission with the
exhibit, noting the many contributions of Catholics to the
historical landscape of higher education in New York City.
The event concluded with a raffle after which attendees toured
the exhibit having gained a deeper understanding of St. John’s and
The School of Education’s roles in New York’s history. “It
was nice to see St John’s well displayed in the higher education
portion of the exhibit,” said Frank Dinger ’71MBA, a member of The
School of Education 100-Year Leadership Committee. “I am
delighted that I attended and was able to see some old
friends!” “It was a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon,”
agreed Mary Ellen Freeley ’84Ed. “Seeing old friends and alumni
along with a quality program made this a great day!”
