An early morning rainstorm didn’t dampen the spirits of golfers
at the 28th Annual Staten Island Golf Outing held at the South
Shore Country Club on July 18. More than 75 St. John’s University
alumni and friends braved the severe weather to play 18 holes of
golf and raise funds for the Sipp/DeStefano Scholarship Fund to
benefit deserving Staten Island campus students.

Following golf, attendees gathered for cocktails, dinner and
lively conversation. The evening’s honorees, Ron Mazzucco ’73L,
Annette Angiuli ’78NDC, Harry P. Doherty and the Brian Cannizzaro
Scholarship Committee members were recognized by University
representatives for their devotion to St. John’s and the Staten
Island community during a formal program at dinner.
Mazzucco, who served as chairman of the Staten Island Golf and
Tennis Outing from 1997 - 2006, helped raise more than $200,000 for
the University during that time including the establishment of a
$100,000 endowment. A successful legal professional, he also gives
back to the University as a member of the Law School Mentor program
and an adjunct professor at the Staten Island campus. Mazzucco
believes in giving St. John’s some of his time and resources
because he believes in the future of its current students. “What
we’re doing is so important,” he said. “If just one student at St.
John's was able to graduate and succeed in this world because of
the work that this Golf Outing does, then that’s enough.”
Angiuli, the administration’s service excellence representative
at Staten Island University Hospital, is a tireless advocate for
the Staten Island community. She continues to serve the community
through her involvement with the March of Dimes, Seamen’s Society
for Children and Families, American Red Cross, South Shore YMCA and
Richmond Home Needs Services.
Doherty, a friend to St. John’s and the Staten Island community
for many years, retired from the banking industry in 2006 where he
served in various capacities at SI Bank and Trust, Staten Island
Savings Bank and Independence Community Bank. A true community
leader, he lends his time and energy to several charitable
organizations including the Staten Island Foundation, CSI
Foundation, and Bayley Seton Hospital. He was recently honored by
the Staten Island Rotary with the Paul Harris Award, the highest
distinction bestowed upon a Rotarian.
Also honored were the Brian Cannizzaro Scholarship Committee
members who presented a check for $25,000 during the evening’s
events to Nick Legakis, associate director, Office of Institutional
Advancement, Staten Island. They were recognized for their efforts
to support Staten Island organizations in memory of Brian
Cannizzaro, a New York City firefighter and St. John’s alumnus, who
lost his life during the events of September 11th.
The day concluded with a sense of good will towards and support
for St. John’s. Former Staten Island Borough President Ralph
Lamberti commented that “Despite the weather, everyone had such a
great time. This is such a great event, and certainly a few
sprinkles were not going to put a damper on the terrific work that
St. John’s does—not just at the outing, but every day.”
