St. John’s Thanks Generous Donors

St. John’s University is always pleased to show it’s appreciation to its most generous alumni and friends, particularly the members of The Loughlin Society. As of the end of the 2011 fiscal year, membership in The Loughlin Society had increased to 1,974 donors, who contributed a total of $6,260,600.

At The Loughlin Society Winter Reception, held at New York City’s historic Pierre Hotel, St. John’s President Rev. Donald J. Harrington, C.M. expressed his personal gratitude for the exceptional support that allows the University to flourish year after year. He noted that U.S. News and World Report ranks St. John’s as the second most popular national university and the third most ethnically diverse national university in the United States, a reflection of the continuing strength of the University’s commitment to opportunity for deserving students

“I am so proud of our mission, and proud that each of us here tonight can articulate that mission,” said Fr. Harrington. “Our University is growing and expanding every day, providing our students with an excellent education, and all of that is made possible because of your support. I thank you for being faithful to our mission, and for all that you do to make the University what it is today.”

A number of alumni present at the reception shared their reasons for making membership in The Loughlin Society a priority.

“For me, The Loughlin Society is all about giving back,” said Mary Ann Leonard ’65Ed, ’67GEd. “As a graduate of St. John’s I’ve made wonderful friends, and I’m so happy to be able to support the University in a very real way. I love St. John’s!”

Many members of The Loughlin Society are also St. John’s employees. Day in and day out, they see firsthand what the generosity of the University’s donors does for its students, and are happy to be a part of that commitment.

At a recent breakfast for these special members of The Loughlin Society, guests heard scholarship student Donald Wiggins, Jr., ’12C, express his heartfelt gratitude for their support.

“Thank you for what you have done for me, and for the thousands of other        St. John’s students who are just like me,” said Wiggins. “Although you may not know us personally, you will one day know what your generosity has accomplished, because I promise you that because of your help we will make the world a better place for us all.”

The Loughlin Society is a donor recognition group comprised of supporters who make annual gifts to the University of $1,000 or more.
