The Black Alumni Association has a number of committees in which volunteers are always needed and welcome.

Prominent Alumni
Many of today's prominent African-Americans once sat in the classrooms of St. John's University:
  • Dr. Elaine Weddington Steward '84 SVC, '87L
    Vice President, Assistant General Manager and Legal Counsel to the Boston Red Sox.
  • Dr. Carl A. Fields '42C (Deceased)
    First African American appointed Associate Dean at Princeton University, first African American to be tapped for the Skull and Circle Honor Society of St. John's College.
  • Congressman Charles B. Rangel '60L
    Elected and remains in Congress since 1970, member and founder of the Congressional Black Caucus, U.S. Army Purple Heart recipient.
  • Ron Brown '70L (Deceased)
    First African American to hold the position Chairman of the Democratic National Party, former U.S. Secretary of Commerce.
  • Teresa A. Mason '79SVC
    First woman and first African American to hold the position of Sheriff of New York City.
  • Cora Walker '45CBA, '46L
    First African-American woman to graduate from the St. John's University School of Law in 1946. Prominent lawyer and partner in the Law Firm of Walker & Bailey located in Manhattan.
