In a year when head coach Steve Lavin and the Red Storm men’s
basketball team have revitalized St. John’s storied program, it is
only fitting that the most-decorated player in school history,
Chris Mullin, has been chosen as one of eight members of the
National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame 2011 induction
class.
The
eight-member group was announced on Monday and also includes former
players Cazzie Russell, Ralph Sampson and James Worthy, coaching
greats Bob Knight and Eddie Sutton, and contributors Joe Vancisin
and Eddie Einhorn. The Class of 2011 will be inducted into the
National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame on Nov. 20, 2011, at
the Midland Theatre in Kansas City, Mo., as part of a three-day
celebration of college basketball. The hall of fame is located in
the College Basketball Experience in Kansas City, Mo.
Mullin starred at St. John’s from 1981-85 and directed the
Redmen to some of the greatest seasons in program history. A
three-time BIG EAST Player of the Year (1983-85), Mullin averaged
19.8 points as a senior while leading St. John’s to the 1985 Final
Four and its first No. 1 ranking since 1951. In 1985, he received
the John R. Wooden Award as the nation’s top player and was named
the Player of the Year by both United Press International and the
U.S. Basketball Writers Association. Mullin, a two-time
All-American, also garnered consensus first-team All-American
honors as a senior.
