Presentation of the
Geraldine DeMilt and William A. DeMilt
Many times things seem to happen for a reason, a reality that was
especially true in the lives of Geraldine and William DeMilt. One
of the few college students with access to a car in the early
1960s, William was asked by a fellow student whom he drove to St.
John’s if one of her girlfriends could ride with them. He agreed,
and the new passenger turned out to be Gerry. They started dating
during their Junior year, and were married three years after their
graduation in 1963, he with a B.B.A. from The College of Business
Administration and she with a B.S. from The School of Education.
Although their professional lives took them in different
directions, they have been riding through life together ever since.
William enjoyed an exceptional career in business, holding
executive positions at a variety of organizations, including Senior
Vice President of European American Bank, Executive Vice President
of Mutual of America and Senior Vice President and Chief Financial
Officer of United Way of New York City, from which he retired in
2007. Geraldine continued her education and received her master’s
in education from The School of Education in 1968. During a career
that spanned more than 40 years, she inspired students in both
public and parochial schools and earned for herself a biographical
listing in Who’s Who Among Teachers. The spirit of St.
Vincent burns brightly within them both, and over the years they
have been active in a number of community organizations, including
St. Mary’s Healthcare System for Children, the Nassau County Museum
of Art, and the Friends of the Rockville Centre Library. While
their love for each other flourished, so did their commitment to
St. John’s, as evidenced by their long-standing membership in The
Loughlin Society. Tonight, on the 50th anniversary of William and
Geraldine’s undergraduate graduations, and in recognition of their
half-century of love for each other and the University that brought
them together, St. John’s University pays tribute to two very
special alumni and, with admiration and affection, presents the
Fidelitas Award to Geraldine DeMilt and William A. DeMilt.
