Presentation of the Pietas Medal to
Sister Catherine Thornton, OP
Sister Catherine Thornton, OP received her B.A. in Education from St. John’s School of Education in 1971. A member of the Dominican Order for more than a half century, she currently serves as Resident Coordinator at the Ozanam Hall Nursing Home; prior to this she was, for many years, Director of Religious Education, Pastoral Associate and Chaplain in parishes and healthcare facilities throughout the Dioceses of Brooklyn and Rockville Centre. She is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Salus Animarum Medal from the Cathedral Residence of the Immaculate Conception for fostering vocations to the priesthood and the Seton Moore Award for Religious Education Administrators of the Diocese of Brooklyn. The Thornton family has a special bond with St. John’s and the Vincentian community. Sister Catherine’s brother John was a double alumnus of the University and Catherine and John’s other brother, Michael, now deceased, was a Vincentian priest. In celebration of her lifetime commitment to serving the needs of others and the 40th anniversary of her graduation, St. John’s University is pleased to present the Pietas Medal to Sister Catherine Thornton, OP.
