Louis Carnesecca

A double alumnus of St. John’s and a name familiar to everyone in the University community, Louis Carnesecca – Lou, as he has always been called - received his B.A. from St. John’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences in 1950 and his M.S. from The School of Education in 1960. Currently serving St. John’s as Assistant to the President, Community Affairs, he is a true New York icon best known for being the most successful Men’s Basketball Coach in St. John’s history, amassing 526 wins during a his storied 24-  season career. His accomplishments gained him membership in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, the New York State and New York City Basketball Halls of Fame and the Catholic High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame. He was named National Coach of the Year by the Associated Press Basketball Writers in 1983 and again in 1985. His exceptional devotion to alma mater earned him the President’s Medal in 1970, the Pietas Medal in 1979, the Medal of Honor in 1995 and the Spirit of Service Award in 2008. In 2000, Coach Carnesecca became Dr. Carnesecca as a grateful University awarded him a Doctor of Pedagogy, Honoris Causa. His love for alma mater is visible in a thousand ways, including through his membership in both The Loughlin Society and The McCallen Society. Tonight, in celebration of his outstanding career as a coach, educator and mentor and in recognition of the 60th anniversary of his undergraduate graduation and the 50th anniversary of his graduate graduation, St. John’s University is pleased to induct Louis Carnesecca into the Heritage Circle.
