John A. Warren, Jr. '74C, '88HON was awarded the Pietas Medal of
St. John’s University at the 28th Annual Alumni Convocation on
Friday, May 29, 2009.
He received his B.A. in Mathematics from St. John’s College of
Liberal Arts and Sciences in 1974. Following his years as a
professional basketball player in the NBA, he served as Senior
Manager at Ernst and Young, LLP from 1976 through 1999.
He has devoted his talents to the University’s Department of
Athletics through service on numerous committees, including the Joe
Lapchick Character Award Committee, the Basketball Legacy
Committee, the Board of Athletic Control, and has offered
thoughtful insights regarding candidates for selection to the
University’s Athletic Hall of Fame.
In 1988 St. John’s acknowledged his loyalty by conferring upon
him a Doctor of Commercial Science, Honoris
Causa.
“What an honor,” he said. “Sometimes I wonder what I’ve
really done to deserve all this. I’m really honored to
receive this award.”
The Pietas Medal is a singular honor reserved for alumni who
have demonstrated loyalty, fidelity and devotion to alma
mater in a multitude of ways.
