Joseph M. Scharfenberger '69C received the Alumni Outstanding
Achievement Award of St. John’s University at the 28th Annual
Alumni Convocation on Friday, May 29, 2009.
After receiving his B.A. from St. John’s College of Liberal Arts
and Sciences in 1969, he remained at the University for three years
as Assistant to the Dean of the St. John’s College, and in 1972
entered the business world as Product Manager for Burroughs
Corporation.
In 1975 his career took him to The Chase Manhattan Bank, where
two years later he was named Second Vice President. In 1980
he was named Vice President and served in various senior executive
positions until 1988, when he became Senior Vice President and
President of Chase Automotive Finance.
Mr. Scharfenberger was appointed Chief Operating Officer of
Chase BankCard Services in 1995 and, following the bank’s merger
with Chemical Bank in 1996, was appointed Executive Vice President
and Executive of Small Business Financial Services, positions he
held until his retirement in 2006.
A dedicated community leader, Joseph Scharfenberger has reached
out to others through service as Vice Chair of multiple corporate
United Way Campaigns and as Director on the Board of Junior
Achievement of New York.
The Alumni Outstanding Achievement Award is an honor reserved
for alumni who have either distinguished themselves in their
personal careers and professions or have made a significant
contribution to the life of the University.
