Richard C. Nerod '59C was awarded the President’s Medal of St. John’s University at the 28th Annual Alumni Convocation on Friday, May 29, 2009.

He received his B.A. magna cum laude from St. John’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences in 1959.

As a student he was active in a number of campus activities, and was selected for membership in the prestigious Skull and Circle Honor Society.  After graduation he began a 40 year career at General Motors, starting as a Senior Clerk and then moving overseas for 28 years in increasingly responsible postings in 10 countries.  He returned to the United States in 1991 when he was named Vice President for Latin American operations.

In 1998 he became the 10th ranking executive in General Motors to become a charter member of its Automotive Strategy Board, an elite group of leaders reporting directly to the president.  He retired in 2000.

Always close to alma mater, he is a longtime member of The Loughlin Society and The McCallen Society, a benefactor of St. Thomas More Church, and has endowed a scholarship.  In 1999 he was awarded the St. John’s University Alumni Outstanding Achievement Award.

A dedicated community leader, he has generously supported numerous organizations and agencies, including the Sisters of St. Dominic, Covenant House, the Filling Memorial Home and the Miami Rescue Mission.

“I’m feeling humbled and proud to be here,” he said.  “The University means a great deal to me and always has.  This medal is totally priceless to me.”

The President’s Medal is among the most prestigious awards at St. John’s University.  It is presented to an individual who has achieved exceptional personal and professional success and/or rendered outstanding service to the University or society.
