John H. Carew '59C, '00HON was inducted into the Heritage Circle of St. John’s University at the 28th Annual Alumni Convocation on Friday, May 29, 2009.

He received his undergraduate degree from St. John’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences in 1959. 

A gifted athlete, he earned nine varsity letters for track and was named co-captain of the 1958 Cross Country Track Team.  He became a member of the United States Marine Corps, ultimately serving as Lieutenant Colonel and Special Assistant to the Commandant for Leadership Studies. 

In civilian life he established himself in the fields of sales and training, beginning as a salesperson in the garment district of New York City and quickly progressing through various positions until being named Director of Sales Training and Development for the Mead Corporation in 1969.   In 1976 established his own corporate entity by founding Carew International, where he remained until 2005, when he founded and became Chief Executive Officer of Jack Carew and Associates LLC, a worldwide provider of sales and leadership education training. 

He is a member of the St. John’s University Board of Governors, The Loughlin Society and the Spiked Shoe Alumni Association.  A grateful University inducted him into the Athletic Hall of Fame in 1998, awarded him the President’s Medal in 1999 and conferred upon him an honorary Doctor of Commercial Science degree in 2000. 

“I’m not sure that I deserve this award,” he said “but I’m absolutely honored to accept it.  St. John’s is a great place…they got me my first job.”

Induction into the Heritage Circle is reserved for alumni who have graduated 40 or more years ago and have maintained a close association with the University in a unique and extraordinary way.
