Staten Island Campus -
On Friday, May 6, 2011, the Alpha Beta Gamma Chapter of Kappa Delta Pi International Honor Society
held its annual induction ceremony in the Campus Center Gymnasium
on the Staten Island
campus. Thirty-two undergraduate and graduate students from
The School of Education were inducted into the
prestigious Honor Society.
Alpha Beta Gamma, an esteemed honors society
within Kappa Delta Pi, was founded to foster
excellence in education and promote fellowship among those
dedicated to teaching. It requires all qualifying members to
acquire and maintain a minimum GPA of 3.3 and 3.7 for
undergraduates and graduates, respectively. In 2007 and 2009, St.
John’s Alpha Beta Gamma Chapter of Kappa
Delta Pi earned the prestigious Achieving Chapter
Excellence (ACE) Award, an honor in which only 20 out of over 500
Chapters have received.
Over 200 family members, friends and guests attended the event in
support of the new initiates and were welcomed by Chapter
Counselor, Susann Ragone and Associate Counselor, Dr. Regina
Mistretta in the opening address. Chapter President, Ciara Fazio
led the ceremony with the assistance of the Chapter’s executive
board members to induct sixteen undergraduates and sixteen graduate
students into Alpha Beta Gamma. Following the
initiation, new Executive Board members of Alpha Beta
Gamma were chosen for the 2011-2012 year and current
members were awarded certificates of active participation, letters
of recommendation and honor cords for their involvement in events
throughout the year.
Outstanding students and faculty members were also recognized for
their contributions to the Alpha Beta Gamma
Chapter of Kappa Delta Pi. Professor Diane Matteo
and graduate student Amanda Nicolosi, both of whom volunteered
their services at the Literacy Alive event, “The Dr. Seuss Read a
Loud Pajama Party”, were awarded the Service to the Chapter Award.
Dr. Virginia Savarese, adjunct professor, received the Educators
Make the Difference Award for having spoken about “21st Century
Learning” at the general membership meeting of Kappa Delta
Pi.
“The Induction ceremony is a special event because not only is our
chapter welcoming new members, but we are also acknowledging our
active members by presenting them with certificates of
participation, letters of recommendation and honor cords,” said
Mrs. Ragone. “The ceremony marks the culmination of a year
service, professional development and scholarship.”
