The Hugh L. Carey Community Scholarship
Award provides financial assistance to commuter students residing
in the five boroughs of New York City.
Who is eligible?
First-time and full-time freshmen who will be commuting from the
five boroughs of New York City and who are accepted into one of St.
John’s four-year degree programs for the 2013-2014 academic
year.
Amount
$1,250 guaranteed annually and up to $3,000 annually based on
demonstrated need. Renewable up to four years as long as the
student remains in good academic standing.
Do I have to apply?
No. Students from New York City are automatically considered and
awarded the minimum amount of $1,250 per year for a total of $5,000
over four years. Students who demonstrate a financial need (and who
complete the FAFSA form by
March 30 using our school code
002823) may receive up to $3,000 per year, for a
total of $12,000 over four years. Should you file the FAFSA and
demonstrate financial need, you will be notified of the exact
amount of the Hugh L. Carey Community Scholarship Award in your
financial aid award letter. If you do not file the FAFSA, you will
still be notified of the Hugh L. Carey Community Scholarship Award
in your financial aid award letter though as a reminder you will
receive the minimum $1,250 scholarship amount. We will begin
mailing financial aid award letters in March.
What do I need to do to keep the
scholarship?
The scholarship is renewable up to four years as long as the
student remains in good academic standing. To qualify for
scholarship amounts over the $1,250 minimum award, students must
submit a FAFSA form every year and
demonstrate financial need.
Who is not eligible?
Students who: do not reside in one of New York City's five
boroughs; choose to reside on campus; are enrolled in the joint
B.S./M.S., B.S./M.A., B.S./M.B.A. or B.A./M.A./M.B.A. programs
and/or the six-year Pharm.D. Program.
